I remember when I started PS.40 in third grade coming from two previously elementary schools, I can tell you I wasn’t thrilled. It was about to be torture all over again building relationships with peers and teachers. What curriculum would I have to learn now? How am I going to know where all the classrooms are? As soon as I started, I remember going to the main office and getting my new class assignment. My older sister put some lip gloss on my lips and told me I couldn’t look ashy. Meanwhile I’m shaking in my boots extremely nervous. My first teacher here Ms. Germaine she made third grade a breeze and introduce to the friends that I should keep. I joined afterschool where we had dance and homework help. Just like I started making friends and feeling like this new school wasn’t so bad. There was a dance program on Saturdays that focused on females and helping us gain a better understanding of who we were. I took a school trip to Vermont where I stayed on a farm and saw life in a different perspective. Now I’m in sixth grade and I don’t want to graduate this school has become my second home. The first thing I told my sixth-grade teacher Mr. Brown was we must get valedictorian. He had to put me up to the challenge and we succeeded at this. I graduated P.S.40Q as valedictorian and I still can remember graduation and giving my speech. I stuck to my words I will never forget P.S.40Q and here I am giving my all to P.S.40Q.
2019 my journey at my former Elementary school would begin with a Kindergarten teacher position at "The Samuel Huntington School" P.S.40Q. I remember like yesterday getting my demo lessons together and taking a vow to myself that I would put my very best foot forward to serve my former community and scholars who reflect me. I wanted to come back to show the black and brown girls now from 3k-5th grade that no matter what people say, doubts, negativity, or no matter where you are right now, it does not stop your path to greatness. Scholars would be able to build relationships with me first from my love for teaching and then grow the love for learning. I see each scholar as myself. I am culturally responsive to all scholars because in many circumstances, I have been through exactly what they are going through now.
